The 5 Wood Floor Problems You Might Not See… But We Do

Welcome back, lovely reader! 💜And if you’re new here, a big warm hello to you too—grab your cuppa ☕ (milk, no sugar for me, thanks!) and settle in to read our latest article, “The 5 Wood Floor Problems You Might Not See—But We Do (And Fix!)”

If you’re thinking about restoring your wood floors in Newmarket or the surrounding areas, this one’s for you.

At Floor Sanding Newmarket, we’re lucky enough to be out and about every week helping homeowners like you fall back in love with their wooden floors. And while most floors are just begging for a little TLC, there are some common gremlins we run into that can make the process a bit trickier.

But don’t worry—we’re not ones to shy away from a challenge. 💪🏽 So here are the top five wood floor issues we come across during quotes and how we deal with them like pros:

1. Woodworm: The Tiny Terror

The first of the 5 wood floor problems you may not see… and quite frankly you probably don’t want to see! Yes, it sounds like something out of a children’s book… but woodworm is real, and it can creep into the outer layers of your floorboards. These little beetles love damp, cosy wood (especially older properties), and they munch away in the sapwood for years before popping out, leaving behind tiny “flight holes”.

The good news? Most cases aren’t severe, and we can usually restore the floor without replacing the whole lot. And thanks to modern central heating, woodworm infestations are less active than they used to be.

2. Moisture Mayhem

We get a lot of calls about floors that are lifting, swelling, or just not looking their best. Often, the culprit of one of the other 5 wood floor problems you may not see is moisture. Wood is a natural material… it loves to soak up the humidity in the air like a sponge. Too much moisture causes the boards to expand, which can mean trouble when it’s time to restore them.

If this happens, don’t panic. We’ll assess the condition of your floor and let you know if we can sand it or if a bit of board replacement is needed.

3. Dry Rot: The Silent Assassin

Unlike moisture, dry rot is what happens when wood dries out too much. Sounds backwards, doesn’t it? But it’s true—bone-dry wood can become brittle and crumbly, and in some cases, this decay can spread.

Termite damage can also lead to dry rot, and once it starts, there’s no going back—it needs replacing. If we spot dry rot during your floor sanding quote in Newmarket, we’ll be honest and let you know the best solution.

4. Cupping: When Your Floorboards Go Wavy

Ever walked across your floor and felt it wasn’t quite… flat? That’s likely cupping, which is when the underside of your floorboard absorbs more moisture than the top.

Think of it like a wooden surfboard. It curves, and that’s not what we want for your beautiful floor. While some boards you can save, others may need replacing. We’ll always do our best to match the colour and grain of the original flooring—but as we say, wood has a mind of its own!

5. DIY Disasters (We’ve Seen a Few)

We left this for No. 5 of the 5 wood floor problems we see… we thought we’d save the best till last. We get it—YouTube makes DIY look so easy, right? But when it comes to replacing or repairing floorboards, it’s really one for the professionals.

We’ve seen floors patched up with odd bits of wood, uneven sanding, and finishes that just don’t last. These jobs can be tricky to correct, and they often cost more in the long run. So please—step away from the sander and give us a call. You’ll thank us later!
